Cash-strapped students helped by spring payouts
MORE than 2,000 students from poor families received subsidies worth more than 1 million yuan (US$146,327) from the Jiading government after the spring semester opened.
More than 1,100 students from elementary and middle schools received coupons, and 778 students at other education levels received cash subsidies.
"The coupon is a great help to us," said a resident surnamed Zhou from Lianhua Village in the district's Huating Town, whose grandson is in the ninth grade. "As well as a monthly subsidy of 132 yuan during the semester, the boy gets other discounts at school."
This semester, 218 students from poor families in Huangdu Town received subsidies worth 160,000 yuan.
Students from the low-income families or families getting the subsistence allowance can apply for coupons during their compulsory education period. Students who finish compulsory education can apply for a cash subsidy.
If this is granted, a university student can receive 3,000 yuan annually, a high school student 1,800 yuan annually and a child in kindergarten 600 yuan a year.
The district's trade union, communist youth league and women's federation have introduced several programs to support education.
The district's trade union used 200,000 yuan from its funds to help 172 students from poor families.
People from all walks of life in the district have raised 1.16 million yuan to support more than 1,200 students in need.
