Celebrating the festive season without going broke

AS the end of the year approaches and the Chinese New Year draws nigh, attention turns to the business of finding meaningful gifts for family and friends that won't necessarily cost you an arm and a leg.

Household decorations are always a nice touch. There are window paper cuts and traditional characters posted on doors; there are dangling pendants and figurines.

Among the best places to find these festive decorations are Century Lianhua, Tesco, and Auchan. Even better, if you want to do some bargaining over prices, try the commodity market across from Auchan. It's at the intersection of Qinghe and Bole roads in the Jiading District.

Jiading bamboo carving and yellow grass woven products are very popular with foreign visitors. It's said such craft items are the best souvenir of Jiading a visitor can take home.

Bamboo carvings and yellow grass woven products can be found along Zhouqiao Old Street. There is one shop called Xin Huang Guan there selling authentic bamboo carvings. It's operated by bamboo artist Zhang Weizhong.

Although the price of authentic bamboo carving can be quite high - normally more than 1,000 yuan (US$150) apiece - the works can be a fine addition to a serious art collection.

On one corner of Zhouqiao Old Street there is another store that sells yellow grass woven products, including slippers and handbags. A package of two pairs of slippers will set you back only 120 yuan, and a stylish handbag costs about 50 yuan.

Gifts are one thing, but eating out is perhaps the most social part of the festive season.

Jiading has an array of fine restaurants to fit any taste and any budget.

For those who love barbeque, don't miss Hanlin Barbeque on the fourth floor of Robinson Plaza. Guests with discount coupons will pay only 100 yuan for a meal that normally costs 150 yuan.

There's also Baidu Barbeque nearby, which is also offering a special price for guests who download discount coupons from www.dianping.com. The coupons can reduce the price of a meal from 20 to 30 percent.

For holiday shoppers watching their pennies, www.dianping.com offers a one-stop membership card that gives people discounts of up to 30 percent at about 100 restaurants and entertainments venues in the district.

"Discount'' and "sale" are two words dear to the ears of many people this time of year, especially during this period of high inflation.
