Centenarian shop dispenses traditional remedies
TONGYIQING Pharmacy on Zhouqiao Old Street is a venerable business name in Jiading District.
It was established in 1910 by Li Hanchen. The word yi in its name has the double meaning of "longevity" and "curing ailments."
The pharmacy was originally located just south of the Jinsha Pagoda in Jiading Town. The building was later destroyed by fire, and the business was bought by Mei Hengfu, the owner of Wanxiang-chun Pharmacy.
Mei spent large sums of money to rehabilitate the business, built a new store with 12 rooms opposite the old site and provided expanded space for the processing and storage of herbal medicines. The store was renamed Heji Tongyiqing.
Mei came from a family with a long tradition in Chinese herbal medicine. The family was celebrated for its strict adherence to quality standards. He also asked some famous doctors around Jiading to open a clinic in the store, so as to draw the customers from far and wide.
The pharmacy was widely known for its impeccable customer service. Herbal medicines were often door-to-door delivered to customers, and the doctors in the pharmacy made house calls when necessary. The pharmacy was always willing to open its doors at night if emergencies arose.
After Mei's death, his two sons, Mei Bichang and Mei Biqing took over the business. The shop was subsequently renamed and relocated several times. Later it turned into a public-private partnership business. When Mei Bichang died, the government took over the management of the pharmacy.
Despite all the years of changes, the pharmacy's motto remained: "Quality and customers first.'' The business won a government award as a model unit in 1991.
Today it operates under the name of Tongyiqing Pharmacy under the wing of Jiading Pharmacy Co and has added Western medicines to its stock.
