Ceramic lessons maintain tradition
Giving a lesson to students at Zhongguang High School in Jiading District, Liu Shufen tells them: “When painting on the glaze, you need to hold your painting brush stably and be extremely careful in every move.”
Liu is a national grade-one ceramic artist and one of the representative inheritors of Jingdezhen porcelain, a national intangible cultural heritage. He is a master in underglaze painting.
Ceramics Culture, an extended course given by Liu, has been an important part of the course system of Zhongguang High School.
As a guest lecturer, Liu has been visiting Jiading twice a year for about 10 years to teach students ceramics painting and making replica antique porcelain. Students also have the opportunity to learn from Liu in Jingdezhen city in Jiangxi Province during the summer and winter holidays.
Teaching standard
From the point of view of school president Zhang Junfeng, students’ artistic imagination should not be limited by a unified standard of teaching.
In the first half of this year, construction of a porcelain museum in the school was competed after a year of preparation.
Most of the exhibits are creations of Liu and from his private collections including valuable porcelain pieces in the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties.
“These exhibits can directly show students the procedures of porcelain making so as to promote the preservation and inheritance of traditional craft techniques,” said Liu.
