Cheers! How the culture of bars spread to Anting
THE culture of bars has only a short history in China, and in Anting Town of Jiading District it's also a fresh culture that has developed in recent years.
However, this cultural newcomer develops fast and adapts itself to the environment of this International Vehicle City very well. Compared with bars in other places, bars in Anting display more varieties and more mixes of Eastern and Western cultures.
Over 20 years ago, Volkswagen first came to Anting and cooperated with the Shanghai Vehicle Factory. At that time, Volkswagen brought not only Santana, which became popular in China for the next 20 years, but also many experts and professional workers from Germany. They worked in Anting and lived in Anting, rooting German cultures into local Anting culture in various ways - like the bars.
Mixing both Eastern and Western cultures, there must be at least one style that will suit you. On Changji Road there is a bar named Shouly's Bistro, which is famous in Anting. Just from the word "Bistro" we can detect a European flavor - in Europe, a "bistro" is a bar where you can also order food. The boss is a German, and "Shouly" is the name of his Chinese wife. Just like this mixed family, this bar also shows features of mixed cultures. Here customers may try roasted pig trotters in German style, as well as the typically Chinese Yangchun noodles. In Halloween they will hang pumpkin lights; on Easter Sunday they will hide chocolate eggs; during the F1 race they display the uniforms of different teams; when the World Cup comes, they all become devoted fans of Germany.
Chinese people who come from abroad can also be inspired by the bars. On Xinyuan Road there's a bar called Otto's Bar, whose boss is a Chinese-Australian who returned to China and settled down in Anting, spreading his Australian bar culture. Wines are his favorite, especially brands from Australia. He keeps introducing them to customers: "Not all the good wines come from France." Most of its customers are young men over 30, often talking about IT and markets. Anting is a popular place attracting people from different areas, and Otto's satisfies the life style of those people - talking about news from abroad and the future.
"Hit" is the word to describe going to bars to relax. "Hitting the bars" is a modern activity among the young. Listening to music, singing and dancing, playing billiards and darts, chatting with friends and strangers - this kind of entertainment will make you completely relaxed.
The Top No.1 Bar on Moyu Road is a perfect place for fun. It's also a gathering place for many Germans and English is the common language here. "Hello!" "Where are you from?" "Nice to meet you here." Making friends just costs you a few words of greeting.
