Chow down on these scrumptious snacks
GETTING great snacks is easy in Jiading District. There are nearly 100 snack shops on Zhouqiao Old Street with a few more "hidden" in Lane 15 on Beidajie Street. These cheap and delicious snacks attract many locals, as well as tourists.
For only 4 yuan (63 US cents) a bowl, the strong-smelling preserved bean curd is mostly welcomed. The raw tofu is deep fried in oil. As it fries, the white tofu turns golden. Then according to different tastes, top with vinegar, hot peppers, coriander leaves and spread the thick dried mushroom sauce over it. During holidays, the tofu shop can sell up to 600 bowls a day. The boss said that the popularity of his tofu lies in its sauce. The sauce is cooked with chicken, dried mushrooms and carrots. When the sauce is spread on the fried tofu, it tastes delicious.
On weekends, a long queue is often found in front of a store, beside the tofu shop, selling octopus balls. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes to buy a box of octopus balls. The boss is from Anhui Province. One of his relatives traveled to Japan and learned the authentic way of making octopus balls. His relative later taught him. The octopus balls include octopus, cabbage and onion and are then brushed with a secret sauce and sea sedge. One box of octopus balls costs 7 yuan. While waiting for the octopus balls, visitors can look at the traditional ink-wash paintings on the wall, which were created by the boss.
Kaoli (toasted pear), a whole pear stewed with crystal sugar, red date and medlar, is also popular. The pear soup is warm and sweet and can soothe coughing. The boss says Dangshan pears are the best because they are sweeter and juicier than others. The pear should be washed. Then cut off the top and bottom, empty the core, then stuff with red date, medlar and crystal sugar. Stew the pear for two hours. Finally put the pear into a ceramic jar and put in an oven. It will warm you up on a cold day.
