City pilots wireless monitoring system

IN the future it will be possible to check environmental conditions such as air and water quality on your computer or telephone. This concept is currently being tested as Jiading New Town conducts a pilot operation of the Internet of Things environmental monitoring system.

This system is based on the Jiading wireless city network applying Internet of Things sensors, intelligent recognition and other technologies to realize the real-time monitoring of air, water quality, noise, electromagnetic radiation and other environmental elements in the central area of Jiading New Town.

The Jiading New Town Planning and Exhibition Hall is the first and currently the only pilot location for the Internet of Things environment monitoring system whose key is the application of the sensor. A device is placed outside the exhibition hall containing a water collector, temperature and humidity sensor, inhalable particle sensor, negative oxygen ion sensor, noise sensor and radiation sensor which can transfer the information they collect to the data-processing system by the city's wireless network. The information is displayed on the terminal equipment. Thus, a real-time, online, intelligent and rapid environment monitoring network is created.

Air, water quality, noise, radiation and 10 other environmental elements are clearly displayed on the screen of the Jiading New Town Planning and Exhibition Hall showing the difference between the current value and the standard ones by smiling faces or crying faces. Each measure is divided into three levels: good, average and caution.

"This system can provide data to government departments and travel reference to citizens," said Ni Liangliang, a technician from Shanghai Hongwei Information Technology Corporation which is in charge of the design and building of the monitoring system. "In the future, the mobile or computer can search for environment data easily, as long as it is connected to the Internet."
