Cleaner rivers wait for 'all clear' call

THIRTY-SEVEN polluted rivers in Jiading District have been purified recently and are waiting to be assessed.
If passed, a total of 113 rivers in the district will finally be free of their poor reputation.
The Jiading branch of Shanghai Water Environment Monitoring Center reports that all the rivers have reached standard levels.
The elimination of polluted rivers is one main task for the district to establish itself at a national environmental protection standard.
Since 2007, professional technicians have been conducting water quality tests and making plans to improve the 113 rivers.
Up till now, 76 rivers have passed the quality test and reached the city standard. New sewage pipelines of 170 kilometers have been laid and retaining walls built along river banks for 50 kilometers.
