Coach in contests has the golden touch

AT Shanghai Dazhong Technical School, there is a classroom full of electrical equipment where the sound of typing on keyboards gives you an intense feeling.

A countdown timer on the wall reminds students of the limited time to the end of a competition. This is where Gong Weiqing, the teacher giving instruction to students who are to compete in contests, stays most of the day.

Gong is called the Golden Coach because of the number of honors he has achieved, including World Skill Competition Shanghai Division Golden Coach, National Vocational Students Skills Competition and Shanghai Xingguang Project Skills Competition Five-Star Coach.

Last month, Gong won one more award in his teaching career — the Jiading Craftsmanship award for his work in helping his students display their talent.

When Gong started to work 30 years ago as an electric engineer in a company, he never imagined that one day he would become such an outstanding teacher, training students to take part in various contests.

Initially, Gong who didn’t have any teaching experience was reluctant to accept a tutor’s position.

But his first student won a medal in a competition, and that gave him confidence and the determination to devote himself to cultivating more students for performance.

This year, three teams of students are going to take part in different contests. As tutor, Gong has to follow the progress of the three teams every day.

Due to the conflict between competitions and classes, students have to be so outstanding that they can balance the contests and school courses. This year, Song Kangyue, in her second year at school, is an excellent student and a medal chaser.

Gong discovered her gift and cultivated her for competition. In a few days, Song and her partner will attend the national contest as Shanghai representatives.

“Mentor Gong always reminds us the importance of detail. I wish my partner and I can obtain a good result, bringing back an award as a gift for Gong,” Song said

Gu Peijie, once a student of Gong’s, became a skill instructor in the school after graduation. Although Gu and Gong are colleagues now, he still treats Gong as a teacher as before.

“Gong is strict to every student all the time. He tries to teach us as much as possible and help us get through obstacles,” said Gu.

He makes a training plan for every student and pays attention to students’ physical and mental conditions.

He says watching students growing up is the most satisfying thing ever.
