Collective bargaining pacts flourish

FOR the past three months, Jiading District has used collective bargaining agreements to determine salaries.

The district's 228 companies with their own labor unions entered into new salary pacts, and another 268 companies have promised to negotiate pay scales with workers.

The negotiated collective contracts clearly spell out salary rates and worker benefits.

Enterprises, such as Haye (Shanghai) Refrigeration Machinery Co, have promised a salary increase of not lower than 12 percent next year.

By the end of November, 90 villages and industrial parks had already signed negotiated salary contracts covering 964 companies.

The relevant department of Jiading government said it would continue to press hold-out companies to join in the collective bargaining process.

The district estimates that 65 percent of the companies in its jurisdiction will have signed collective salary agreements by the end of this year. That ratio is expected to rise to 85 percent next year and to 100 percent in 2012.
