Communities going green to save the environment
The Xinyi Community Activity Center in Jiading, held an environmentally-themed event recently, attracting the participation of 11 communities from across Shanghai.
Volunteers from 鈥淕reen Hands Housewives鈥 from Xuhui District introduced their eco-friendly ideas and shared their experience in subjects ranging from growing organic vegetables on apartment balconies to making musical instruments out of glass bottles.
One volunteer showed how people could grow vegetables, including turnips and broad beans in an area as small as one square meter.
Some residents brought their children to introduce them to environmental friendly ideas.
Many of those taking part were surprised at just how much waste could be recycled and turned into useful products.
One resident surnamed Zha was shocked when he was told that the bench he was sitting on had been made from 856 milk cartons.
In recent years, a number of community-level volunteer organizations for environmental protection have been established in Jiading, encouraging more people to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle.
