Community care at the touch of a button

Zhu Xiaoyun phones more than 200 Nanxiang Town residents every day, finding out if there is anything they need. He’s an assistant at a care center in town.

Nanxiang has 15,526 residents over the age of 60, most of whom, if they need it, prefer home or community-based care. Some live alone, and there have been cases where old people have died at home unnoticed. The Nanxiang government launched a senior care service at the end of last year.

Xu Guisheng was one of the first to benefit. The 65-year-old was caring for his sick son on his own and used to worry about what would happen if he fell ill.

“With the Yiyangbao service I feel much relieved,” Xu Guisheng said.

The Yiyangbao service is one of the senior care programs in Nanxiang, in which more than 100 older people living alone receive free phones. Apart from the basic functions of ordinary phones, it can receive free phone calls from the senior service base. They can dial the base by simply clicking a button on the phone, requesting services that range from haircuts to housekeeping.

The senior care service is based at the Community Service Center in Nanxiang.

The government of Anting Town and Jiading New City have set up six senior care homes with 228 temporary beds for older people who find it difficult to take care of themselves but are reluctant to leave home.

A care home in Beiguan Village caters for 21 local residents.

Guan Hui’e, 84, lives a few hundred meters away from the care home. She receives blood pressure checks and can book medical services there.

There are 48 beds in the care home, which also provides catering services for 45 other older folks living nearby.
