Companies thrive on green business
SOME companies in Jiading District turn out to embrace a more advanced attitude toward environmental protection and are adept at "turning waste into treasure" as the district government has launched a special funding for projects related to recycling to encourage environmentally-friendly use of resources.
Roads that can 'breathe'
Shanghai Jiatong New Material Technology Development Co specializes in making a new asphalt material that can "breathe."
The material is made from waste asphalt concrete. The company collects waste asphalt concrete and puts it into high-pressure processing equipment for decomposition. Stones and mineral aggregates are finally added to make the special asphalt mixture.
Roads built with the new material have better permeability, which adjusts temperature and humidity of the city. It reduces road noise by four to nine decibels in much the same way as a carpet reduces noise in a room. These roads can also absorb pollutants and reduce dust as well as speed snow melting and improves frost resistance.
The company has built a dedicated production line for the new material. It produces 100,000 tons of special asphalt mix, realizing the income of 9.5 million yuan each year.
King trumpet mushrooms
King trumpet mushrooms have great economic value but growing is expensive since they usually feed off the woods to survive.
Chen Yin, director at Bei'an Mushroom Industry Cooperative in Huating Town, found a way to solve the problem.
In Jiading, every year there are a lot of waste twigs from grapes, peaches, green trees and other crops.
If these are crushed and mixed with fruit peels and sugar, a "bacteria package" is created.
The mushrooms can grow on these packages that are covered with soil. When the nourishment of these bacteria packages is used up, they can also be served as the fertilizer for the field.
Old engines
Should an old engine be thrown away or sold as scrap metal? The answer from Shanghai Xingfu Rebuild Power Train Co Ltd is neither. They remake such engines.
In early 2009, the company launched a remanufacturing and reconstruction project for vehicle power trains, which recycles automobile engines and transmissions for reuse.
Employees analyze the remaining useful life of the "waste components" one by one after dismantling and cleaning them. The useful parts are kept and worn parts are replaced. The re-made engine is tested afterwards.
Rejuvenated engines perform at the same level as new engines, the company says.
About 80 to 85 percent of the original engine's value is reused through this process, reducing production costs by 40 to 60 percent compared to making a new engine.
Annually, the company remakes 4,000 engines and 4,000 transmissions, saving 826 tons of steel and 2.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity.
