Connected cars on trial in Jiading

Shanghai Auto City in Jiading is building the country’s first connected car trial zone.

It was announced at the 2015 China International Industry Fair earlier this month. It is due to have 2,000 smart cars in Anting Town by 2017.

The company aims to build the first national platform for research, development and promotion of connected cars. It will also step up the communications between companies and industries.

Chen Hailin, assistant to general manager of Shanghai Auto City, said the zone will be built in three stages.

In the first stage, signal lights and relevant devices will be installed on a 3-kilometer street in Shanghai’s Expo Park. Traffic lights, lamp posts and sensors have already been installed.

Four carmakers have already begun tests in the zone. A 3.5-kilometer street on the Jiading campus of Tongji University will include five intersections controlled by traffic lights, a roundabout, 20 smart driving test devices and a control center.

The 5-square-kilometer area of the first stage is expected to be completed by April. Its system will have real-time communications between the road, lights, driver and car. There will be 200 cars to be tested in 86 scenarios.

“The first stage aims to set up an environment to test, verify and showcase connected cars and relevant technologies,” Chen said.

The second stage will be launched in July next year. The area of the trial zone will be expanded to 27 square kilometers.

“There will be at least five self-owned brand cars to participate in the test driving. The number of such cars will be 2,000,” revealed Chen.

In July 2017, the third stage will start, covering 25 square kilometers of the central area in Shanghai Auto City.

The length of the trial streets will be around 50 kilometers, featuring residential areas, schools, hotels and parks with traffic lights that are controlled remotely at 50 intersections.
