Construction starts on cancer center
CONSTRUCTION of the China Liver Cancer Science Center started on October 12. The center forms an important part of the Anting branch of the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital affiliated to the Second Military Medical University and is the second national science center approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.
The National Center for Nano Science and Technology was the first.
With a total investment of 1.6 billion yuan (US$251 million) and covering 230,000 square meters, the Anting branch will also include a new hospital. The construction contract was signed in July with a planned construction period of 715 days.
The new hospital will include an inpatient building with 1,500 beds, an outpatient building, a medical technology building, a rehabilitation center, a health check center and a training center. The roof structure is planned to be sealed in May 2012 and the hospital is expected to open in 2013.
An investment of 400 million yuan is slated for the China Liver Cancer Science Center and construction will be completed in three years. The center will be responsible for conducting research on how to prevent and treat liver cancer.
World-renowned liver surgeon Wu Mengchao, along with six other members of the China Academy of Sciences, who have long been engaged in liver cancer research, submitted an application for integrated research on liver cancer five years ago, which was accepted and the project was listed as a key national project on epidemic diseases during the 11th Five-Year Period (2006-2010).
