Cooperation in care for the elderly

About 30 percent of residents in Jiading are seniors while about 10,000 residents become seniors every year, according to a report on care for the elderly.
The aging population, with more than 172,600 registered residents in the district aged at 60 or above, has become a huge challenge as the majority of local nursing homes are not able to provide professional medical care to the elderly.
But the situation is changing, as community health and sanitation service centers have joined up with local nursing homes to provide medical treatment and services for residents.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a win-win solution for everyone 鈥 nursing homes, medical care providers and society,鈥 said Chen Yang, director of the Aging Affairs Department at the Jiading District Bureau of Civil Affairs.
There are three types of cooperation in the main, according to Chen.
Most nursing homes choose to establish a partnership with a local community sanitation center, which will send doctors and nurses to nursing homes on a regular basis, usually every week.
The service enables residents to have regular checkups. They can also have their medicine prescribed and delivered.
Other nursing homes have the sanitation service centers set up a service station inside their premises.
For instance, the first floor of the Jinma Community Welfare Center looks like a community hospital equipped with a pharmacy, a transfusion room, treatment rooms and other medical facilities.
The station has five to six medical professionals to provide daily care to the 152 residents, most of whom are over 80.
Another four private elderly care providers in Jiading adopt a third method by setting up their own medical care centers.
Jiading is encouraging more private providers to adopt such an approach of combining medical care with elderly care, offering diverse services for senior residents and helping ease the difficulties of an aging population.
