Creating the 'green pearl' of the future
JIADING District looks at the future and sees itself as a "green pearl" in the northwest of Shanghai.
This is no idle dream. If all goes to plan, the district will one day be surrounded by the 74-hectare Outer Ring Ecological Forest, a 44.5-hectare green belt around Jiading New City and 79-hectare parkland along the river in Old Town.
The blueprint also calls for 100 parks in this eco-city.
With greenery comes wildlife. Native species in Jiading now number 114, including an array of birdlife at spots such as Liudao Scenic Forest, Jiabao Forest and the Huangdu Fruit Garden.
The outer ring eco-project now under construction will stretch from the Wusong River in the south to the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway in the north ? encompassing a length of 3.7 kilometers, an area of 74 hectares and a cost of about 2.1 billion yuan (US$315 million).
The project's main purpose is to reduce vehicle emissions and improve the environment for those living in adjacent areas.
In a separate project, a green-belt project in Jiading New City is expected to be completed by the end of the year. It aims to reduce the noise and dust of vehicular traffic and provide peaceful surroundings for residents.
In the district's Old Town, a green belt will stretch for 6.5 kilometers along the river, covering more than 70 hectares.
In the next five years, Jiading will invest 1.1 billion yuan to build more than 40 new parks. That will mean one park for every 5,000 residents when the projects are completed.
The new parks, encompassing 2 million square meters, will be built throughout Jiading New City, Anting Town, Nanxiang Town, Malu Town and the Zhenxin Community.
