Cultural activities warmly received
GRASSROOTS cultural activities have emerged in recent years and have been warmly received by locals.
It is not unusual for migrant workers to feel lonely since they live so far from their loved ones. As early as 1996, a series of activities was launched in Jiangqiao Town including art and talent shows, speeches and sports events. These allow migrant workers in Jiangqiao to feel themselves as a part of the community.
There are now nine art, culture and performance groups in Jiangqiao. They have more than 170 active members who perform for over 40,000 migrant workers.
Zhao Minghua came to Jiangqiao from Luoyang in Henan Province in 2007. He is a culture cadre of a community cultural and sports center now. When he first arrived he just wanted to stay for a while and see if he liked the area. If not, he planned to try his luck somewhere else. The series of activities for migrant workers attracted him and he met his sweetheart in Jiangqiao as well. Zhao has since bought an apartment and will get married and settle in Jiangqiao.
Storytelling king Huang Zhenliang is well known not only in Anting Town but also across China. Storytelling has become a way of life in Anting.

The girl's parents are happy to listen to their grand-daughter's stories everyday and feel their retirement life is full of fun. Lu's husband takes charge of audio and props and he no longer indulges in online games.
