Cultural centers awaiting discovery

With a history of 800 years, Jiading has established a collection of national cultural heritage sites and preserved intangible culture heritages such as Jiading bamboo carving. In addition to public museums and galleries, there are also a number of privately-owned folk museums and cultural centers in the district, waiting to be discovered and experienced. Here are three places worth a visit that are located in Jiangqiao Town.

Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy Art Gallery

The Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy Art Gallery opened its doors to visitors in January 2014 as a site especially for professional art exhibitions and cultural exchange events.

It is the result of a further collaboration between the Shanghai Wenjie Media Group and the gallery with an investment totaling 5 million yuan (US$800,000) in 2013.

Covering an area of more than 1,000 square meters, the gallery is able to house more than 300 works of painting and calligraphy, wood carving artworks and strange stones.

Magazine agency Yanhuang Chunqiu was relocated to the gallery last September as well.

The gallery has held exhibitions of famous local artists including Chen Peiqiu, Le Zhenwen, Jiang Hong, Zhang Qiangxin and Wang Weiping.

The indoor spaces include a 300-square-meter hall for exhibitions and rooms for training programs in ceramic arts, guqin (a traditional Chinese music instrument), painting and calligraphy. Sometimes the garden invites renowned local artists to teach the students.

Wutong Culture and
Arts Center

Converted from an old factory, the Wutong Culture and Arts Center, the first folk art gallery in Jiading, has a 700-square-meter gallery and a 500-square-meter ceramic art gallery.

The center has been open since 2011 and has attracted various artists to hold solo exhibitions here.

Split into two levels, thanks to its 4.8 meter ceiling height, the gallery is decorated in basic tones of black and grey, giving visitors a contemporary impression.

The ceramic art gallery provides professional kilns for both visitors and artists to create their own artworks.
