Cultural exchanges leading to better performances

LI Huan, a Xiju Opera fan, hurried from Nanxiang Town to a venue only to find that tickets sold out long ago. Meanwhile, 60-year-old amateur singer Liu Hua got on stage in Luodian Town.
The mutual need to perform and to watch has sparked changes among Jiading residents’ cultural events.
The district’s cultural department has made efforts in coordinating local and outside cultural resources to meet residents’ demand as well as to promote the Jiading brand.
Since 2006, the district’s exploration has led to more varieties of performance. A community singing group was formed to present shows from time to time in the neighborhood and Jiangqiao’s local dance, Jiading’s Xiju Opera and Xuhang’s acrobatics got to appear on the stage of a Shanghai culture festival.
The exchange of folk artists with other towns and cities were often seen in Waigang Town with Taicang’s Chengxiang Town and Anting Town with Kunshan’s Huaqiao Town.
“The residents’ spontaneous cultural events help to integrate resources and balance the demand and supply in this respect,” said Qi Qiusheng, culture director with the district culture authorities. Now culture is no longer a one-way street. The events are also better organized these days.
Wang Ziyi, an amateur singer selected through a talent show held by Anting and Huaqiao in 2015, was invited to join Anting’s chorus. He and other members of the singing group acquired a bigger stage and are welcome by communities with their shows. Wang also works as a culture volunteer to oversee show rehearsals in the community.
“In the cultural resource exchange we have mutual improvement in quality of public culture events,” Qi said.
“Culture needs to be shared and to be built,” he added.
