Cultural relics search hits a bonanza
AN exhibition of seals from Jiading Museum opened to the public in Jiading Bamboo Carving Museum on June 13, the fourth Chinese Cultural Heritage Day.
Jiading District has newly discovered 21 district-level immovable cultural relics recently after investigation. Up till now, Jiading has 102 key relics with 44 immovable relics under investigation Jiading Museum has nearly 10,000 movable relics under 20 categories.
Professionals from district museum have trained officials in charge of culture in towns since March last year when the third national relic census began and required them to report relic clues.
Two months later, the museum received information on nearly 200 relics and 143 were judged as valuable after preliminary evaluation and election by experts.
The census is expected to last until the end of the year.
Among the 21 newly added district-level immovable relics, the Xicheng Bridge built during the Kangxi period of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) is the oldest while the original site of Zhongguang Middle School built in 1945 is the most recent. The list includes ancient architecture as well as modern industry and education relics.
Jiading District originally has five city-level cultural relics, 45 district-level relic protection units and 31 district-level immovable relics, so the total number of key relics now in Jiading reaches 102. The 44 immovable relics under investigation will serve as the key to the political, economic and cultural development of Jiading District.
Among the tens of thousands of relics of Jiading Museum, some are very precious, including the cup of Shang (16th century-11th century BC), the "Double Horse" drawing by painter Xu Beihong, and paintings and calligraphies of Shen Yiqian and Lu Yanshao. And 70 percent of the relics, including chinaware, bamboo carvings, seals, bronze ware and historical documents, were donated.
