Cutting power costs takes priority

SEVERE summer power shortages are forcing many companies to shift production into "power-saving" mode and invest in energy-saving technology. However, it is not a short-term fad - many enterprises are changing their technology for long runs.

From using energy-saving bulbs to frequency conversion equipment, technological reform of Shanghai Real Industrial Co has been going on throughout the year.

"Saving energy is a company's social responsibility, as well as financial profits," said He Shengcai, an engineer of the company.

After visiting the World Expo Shanghai 2010, Shanghai Zhuokai Electronic Technology Co decided to replace its power-consuming humidification system with spray devices widely used in the park. The new method can potentially cut energy consumption by 98 percent - a saving of up to 1,800 kilowatt hours a day. The company has made technical changes on 10 projects since the beginning of 2011. The investment of 2.61 million yuan (US$407,739) can save the company 400,000 yuan a month.

"We invested 1.53 million yuan to transform our electrolytic copper system, which will be paid off in 14 months," said Zhao Yong, equipment manager of the company. "Pollutants in the waste water can be reduced to the minimum by the system."

Delphi Packard Electric System Co estimates saving could reach 1.76 million yuan and 889 tons of coal a year by introducing vacuum motors to its core system.
