AS the Lunar New Year approaches, shopping becomes a favorite pastime, and digital products top the list of things people want to buy for gifts and for themselves.
Jiading District's array of shops and malls provide an excellent venue for seeing what's available at what price, and, then too, there is no end of online sites to browse as well.
High on the list of New Year gifts are the latest global positioning devices for cars, new model digital cameras, the new iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano, or even the latest iPhone 4.
Shoppers can take advantage of discount coupons for digital products on many popular websites such as newegg.com, 360buy.com and ocj.com.
The main advantage of online shopping is lower prices and ease of ordering. Sometimes, products are delivered the same day.
Shanghai Electronic Commercial City in Jiangqiao area has already set up an online electronic shopping mall, attracting over 4,800 registered dealers all over the country. It can now sell the electronic products both online and in the bricks and mortar stores with an area of 260,000 square meters inside the Commercial City.
Shoppers can easily access popular brands such as Dell, Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and Asus.
High-end brands are opening more bricks and mortar stores in Jiading. There are a Sony shop and Apple store on the ground floor of the Robinson Shopping Plaza.
With the popularity of digital products, purchase of laptops and cameras is as common as that of TV sets. Yongle, Gome, Suning and other home appliance chain retailers are also popular places for purchasing digital products.
There are also lots of promotions. Customers who shop at Suning, for example, are eligible for 50 yuan (US$7.50) rebates when they spend at least 1,000 yuan. They also receive 500 points on their Suning membership cards if they spend 10,000 yuan, which means a total discount of up to 10 percent can be shaved. Since Suning, Gome and Yongle stores in Jiading are within a five-minute walk of one another, it's easy to compare the price for the same product in different shops.
