Director tries to unlock potential of employees

THREE months ago, Philippe Rhoumy brought his family to Jiading District from Changchun, Jilin Province in northeast China.

"With an open heart, it's not difficult to adapt to a new environment," the Frenchman says.

His new occupation is managing director of MANN+HUMMEL China, which specializes in filtration.

He says it is very important for a company to unlock the potential of employees.

He is a strong advocate of the company's Rational Suggestion project initiated by the management team and departments of MANN+HUMMEL China. The project has mobilized everyone from the production lines to the offices. Good ideas have flooded in.

"We hope we can attract and keep good employees and spark their potential through our corporate culture and attractive working environment," Rhoumy Philippesays. "I want my colleagues to feel more attached to the company."

Automotive and industrial original equipment manufacturing and after-market service are the key businesses of MANN+HUMMEL China.

Though the car sales growth rate has experienced a slowdown recently, Rhoumy still confident China will continue to be the biggest market in the future 10 to 15 years.

In August, MANN+HUMMEL purchased Bengbu Haoye, a filter maker in Anhui Province. By the end of this year MANN+HUMMEL is going to own five production bases in China with the others in Shanghai, Changchun of Jilin Province Jinan of Shandong Province and Liuzhou of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The Frenchman's ultimate ambition is to make MANN+HUMMEL the biggest filter maker in China.

"We hope filters manufactured by MANN+HUMMEL will be the top choice for Chinese clients," he says.

Localization of research and development, production, sales and services are what the company has focused on since it entered China in 1996. Two years ago, MANN+HUMMEL China cooperated with prominent universities in Shanghai including Shanghai Tongji University to give graduates a real-world experience of various aspects of work inside the company. These graduates are likely to work at MANN+HUMMEL's overseas facilities, which in turn prepares them well for the possibility of becoming future MANN+HUMMEL employees.

In his spare time, Rhoumy enjoys jogging and cycling, just as he did in Changchun.

In Changchun, he enjoyed plenty of sunshine and stunning natural scenery. In Shanghai, he relishes the convenience of living in a vibrant international metropolis.
