District acts to ward off H7N9 virus

JIADING District is making an active action to ward off the H7N9 bird flu virus.

The virus has claimed more than 10 lives in Shanghai with more than 30 infected. Nationwide, more than 100 cases have been confirmed with the death toll at 20-plus.

A special leading group has been set up in Jiading, which dispatches different tasks to eight teams.

All 48 live poultry markets across the district have been shut down. 6,000 fowls have been collected and disposed in harmless way.

Live poultry from other parts of Shanghai and neighboring Jiangsu Province has been forbidden to enter the district since April 6.

Schools in the district are checking students and teachers every morning for any unusual symptoms.

"I spray the chicken cages with disinfectant every day since the bird flu was reported in Shanghai," said Shi Hongru, a local chicken breeder.

"I don't need to worry about my birds any more once they are vaccinated."
