District attracting more species of birds

JIADING saw two more species of birds last year, the Japanese waxwing and a type of bullfinch, making the total number of bird species in the district over 100.

"Birds are especially sensitive to the environment, and the improvement in Jiading is attracting more and more birds," wildlife protection official Lu Wanpeng said.

Some of the birds which arrive in Jiading this year may not be seen the following year if they find the environment unsuitable.

"The number of migratory bird species has been rising steadily over the years, and the number of resident birds is also increasing," Lu Wanpeng said.

As the weather gets warmer, cattle egrets and little egrets are reappearing in Jiading. Visitors to the Shanghai Auto Museum Park can see hundreds of birds flying at the same time, especially the pure white little egrets with their sweet sound.

"I have been taking photos at the park for the past two years, and I feel the number of little egrets is increasing, so are blackbirds and greenwing ducks, and in winter there are a lot of resident birds," photography fan Gu Chengyu said.

Apart from the park, Liudao Scenic Area is also a favorite habitat for birds. Nearly 98,000 migrant birds of almost 80 species visit the area in winter, including magpies, thrushes and turtledoves.

The local government has launched the hotline 6990-2397 to report illegal bird catching.
