District looks at geo-branding to fight fakes
JIADING District recently held a forum to discuss obtaining geographical branding for its top agricultural produce, such as Malu grapes, as part of an anti-counterfeit drive.
Called "Geographic Landmark" by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, this label proves that a product originated from a specific region and in turn guarantees its historical and cultural authenticity and quality.
Jiading white garlic and bamboo carvings have already obtained Geographic Landmark status, in recent years, which has boosted their reputation and values, subsequently reviving their industries.
Last year, Quanjing grain production cooperative in Waigang Town planted more than 1.6 hectares of white garlic and earned about 45,000 yuan (US$7,031) per hectare in profit, more than double that in 2008. Before obtaining its Geographical Landmark label last year, Jiading exported more than 100 tons of white garlic seeds to Japan and South Korea every year, but few farmers were willing to plant white garlic due to the low profit margin.
Subsequently the purchase price of Jiading garlic seeds have grown to 10 yuan per kilogram from the previous 4.6 yuan, and the planting area expanded from 26.7 hectares to 55.2 hectares.
In the 1990s, a Jiading bamboo carving piece was valued at a few thousand yuan, while its price has grown to more than 100,000 yuan at present.
Yang Fuying, who works at the Jiading Bamboo Carving Association, said after their carvings have become geographic landmark in 2009, they have gained more recognition.
Some of the challenges that have emerged with the development of geographic landmarks are higher labor costs and mass production difficulties. To counter these problems, the Jiading Agricultural Commission has sent technicians to instruct local farmers on better growing methods.
