Doctors return from Morocco
A Jiading medical team recently returned from a two-year support mission in Morocco. During the past two years, the team has treated 42,491 out-patients and 7,996 hospitalized patients. It has conducted 9,307 operations and is credited with saving the lives of 187 critically ill patients. The team's effort won praise from the Moroccan government and people.
In May, the medical team spent time in Zagora, a province in southern Morocco. It was the first time Chinese doctors and nurses had ever been there. Team members said they had to work under hard conditions because the province lacked medical tools and modern health facilities.
The primitive conditions didn't deter the Jiading team from its work. The team used surgical instruments they brought from China and helped improve conditions in the provincial hospital. In just nine days, the team performed more than 100 surgical operations.
The team faced many challenges.
In one instance, a six-month-old baby was diagnosed with intussusception, a condition in young children where one portion of the bowel slides into the next, much like pieces of a telescope. That can lead to swelling, inflammation and decreased blood flow to the intestines.
"It is not a particularly high-risk operation in China, but the risk was multiplied in Morocco, where the medical conditions were quite poor," surgeon Shen Qi said. "We had neither pediatric surgeons with us, nor the professional specialists to do this operation. But the team had no choice but to operate anyway."
The surgery was conducted and turned out successfully. The parents, Shen said, were overwhelmed with gratitude.
Some of Jiading's top medical staff were members of the team. They often found themselves serving as diplomats too, strengthening the bond between China and Morocco.
