Dreams come true at Tongji University
TONGJI University's Dream Platform is helping students "make their dreams come true." The idea was from the university's Youth League.
Students can send in application letters to the Dream Platform, and Youth League members then create tailor-made programs to help the students realize their dreams. The league has received 107 applications this year and approved 33 projects.
Many youths dream of being a musician, however, it's difficult to find a free place to practice.
A group of music lovers submitted their plan to the platform and received feedback quickly. The league provided a spacious room and 1,500 yuan (US$237) for the project of "Music Afternoon Tea." Practice was held once a week. Now the students plan to form a band and hold a concert at the end of the semester.
Some students dream of becoming a writer. The Dream Platform has helped organize short story contests and published their works on weibo.
"The contests provided a very good platform for students to show their talents and share ideas with each other," said project leader Miao Tiantian.
While the Dream Platform is essentially about helping students, it has other benefits including enriching campus life and creating a stronger sense of community.
One of the good examples is the project of "Books Flowing" organized by Xie Shouning, who collects the books offered by the students and lends to others who would like to read. The Dream Platform also provides funds to the project to buy the books popular among the students.
Li Haocheng started "Free Hugs" at the campus after hearing about the concept that has proven popular abroad. His idea was to ease the pressure of the students by giving free hugs. After lunch, Li and other students would hold up posters that read "Free Hugs." They will open their arms and hug anyone who feels the need for a little warmth and love.
Another popular project is "U Home Station." The project organizer takes product samples from companies and distributes them to the students. "This month we gave out about 50 samples and received warm feedback from the students," project leader Li Qinbin said.
