Ecology thriving in region’s new wildlife habitat
Building work was finished last month on the Liudao Wildlife habitat in Jiading. The project started in 2013 in a bid to protect the ecological system in the area.
More than 110 different types of trees are now flourishing alongside 93 species of birds and amphibians in the region.
The renovated area covers about a third of Liudao’s 67 hectares.
The good ecological environment attracts many birds each year, including five protected species. A separate area has been set aside for wildlife behind the 2-meter-high fences.
Four newly installed high-resolution cameras enable staff to more conveniently and efficiently monitor birds and other wildlife in the area, a job that took many hours in the past.
In the long run, these video recordings of birds and wildlife are going to help scientists and inspectors to learn and understand more about the habitat and the inhabitants’ activities.
It will also provide video reference for future wildlife protection and ecology restoration projects.
In addition, the construction has already been completed on the bird specimen center which will display more than 50 bird species and around 100 butterfly and moth species.
The center will be opened to the public next year for free as a science and technology educational site. It will enable Jiading residents to understand and value its works.
