E-commerce center a pioneer

THE national warehouse logistics center of Newegg, the US business-to-consumer electronics retailer, opened last month in Jiading Industrial Zone, making the company the first e-commerce enterprise with a logistics center in China.

Jiading residents can already collect products at the warehouse within 10 minutes after an order. The home delivery service guarantees they get products within no more than 24 hours.

At the 10,000-square-meter center, tens of thousands of goods are placed on several hundred shelves.

Operations manager Pei Qing said the center is using a self-developed modern warehouse management system. With the system, information about goods' location, delivery method, goods' numbers are available at a glance.

"It also reduces the delivery time by almost half,'' Pei said.

Using the warehouse in Jiading as a core, Newegg has formed a national logistics network with eight large warehouses in Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an and Nanjing.

Newegg.com.cn is an e-commerce Website founded on the basis of Newegg.com in the United States.

It ranks second among e-commerce enterprises featuring 3C (computer, communication, consumer electronics) products in China. Turnover last year achieved an increase of almost five times compared with that of 2008.

Currently, the Website in China offers 500 new products every day. In addition to 3C products and small household electrical appliance, it is expanding its business to department store products.

It is the only online mall approved by the government to be eligible for "trade-in" retail business.

Li Shiji, executive vice president of global Newegg, said that apart from the national logistics center which had already been built, the Jiading Newegg project would also include its headquarters in China, a research and development center and a training center for employees.

Jiading has also attracted other e-commerce pioneers such as 360buy.com. Its headquarters of East China will start construction in June this year.
