Electric showing from free taxis
A free taxi service offered by a non-profit test drive center in Jiading District to promote clean fuel vehicles has proved a hit with local people.
During the initiative, passengers could make reservations by calling Shanghai Electric Vehicle Test Drive and Test Ride Center and each day one lucky person was chosen to be picked-up free of charge.
The program started in September and ended in the middle of this month. Jiading News tried out the service to see how it fared.
At 5pm at Defu Road in Jiading New Town a driver arrived in a BYD F3DM - an electric vehicle made in China - and picked up the reporter.
The car passed along Defu Road, past Metro Line 11 Baiyinlu station, heading to Shanghai International Circuit on Yining Road, traveling at about 80 kilometers per hour.
The car made little noise and showed a decent rate of acceleration. The vehicle has a top speed of 150 kilometers per hour and can travel for up to 150km when fully charged.
It reached Qichang Road in Waigang Town at 5:20pm, having covered a distance of 13 kilometers in around 20 minutes.
The cost to operate the BYD automobile over that distance is less than 2 yuan (30 US cents), while a similar-sized car powered by gasoline would cost at least 8 yuan.
The BYD F3DM can be charged quickly at various charge stations in Shanghai. It can also be fully charged in seven hours using a domestic 220 volt socket.
The test-drive center was launched in April last year after Shanghai was named as a China (Shanghai) Electric Vehicle International Pilot City, and Jiading chosen as a pilot district.
The center is open all year round and visitors can test-drive an electric vehicle free of charge.
