Eleven 'Little Giants' of industry honored
JIADING District's 11 enterprises have been named Shanghai's scientific and technological "Little Giant" enterprises in 2008 and gained financial support of 13.5 million yuan (US$1.98 million) from the city government.
That made the total number of "Little Giant" enterprises in the district to 22, putting it in the lead among the city's 18 districts and Chongming County, according to the district's Science and Technology Commission,
Thirty-five scientific and technological enterprises applied for the title at district level, 14 of which were listed on the three-year cultivation program. The number of "Little Giant" enterprises at district level by now has come to 74, which can pay more than 900 million yuan in tax annually. It is estimated that by 2010, these 14 enterprises will generate 7.955 billion yuan of sales revenue, 821 million yuan of profits and 459 million yuan of tax revenues.
In recent years, the district has reduced the threshold of enterprises' annual output value to allow more enterprises on the cultivation list. Nowadays, those with annual output value of 10 to 50 million yuan can apply to join the program.
The district has also focused on brand advantage and comprehensive efficiency. With an emphasis on quality, it has limited the number of enterprises on the program's list. Only those whose investment in science and technology accounted for more than 3 percent of total sales revenue and whose main products have independent intellectual property rights and are in accordance with the state's and the city's industrial policies could be listed.
