Energy saving catches on
BUILDINGS in Jiading District have become more environmentally friendly with the installation of energy-saving technology.
At Jiading New City Urban Planning Hall, visitors are not only attracted by its environmentally friendly water system, but also its unique temperature adjustment system.
Without air conditioning, it can also deliver a cool environment in summer and a warm one in winter.
The secret lies in its underground section: 138 tubes go 100 meters underground, making use of the temperature difference between underground water and the Earth's surface to facilitate a ground-source heat pump system.
With this technology, the building can save 50 to 60 percent of power each year compared with what air conditioning uses.
Also, the Blue Palace Hotel has spent 5.6 million yuan (US$819,840) to renovate its air conditioning system with a target to reduce the property's energy consumption.
The hotel started using the new system in June. It has the potential to save 584.6 tons of standard coal and reduce the emission of carbon dioxide of 1,543.3 tons, thus delivering annual energy cost savings of 480,000 yuan.
Some enterprises treat "waste" as treasure. The battery of an electric bike would usually be scrapped after one or two years use, causing riders to spend several hundred yuan on a new one.
However, at Shanghai Biyang Electric Science and Technology Co it is possible to buy a reconditioned one for only 80 to 150 yuan. The regeneration technology reduces the wastes' damage to the environment.
"It's significant to deal with waste batteries correctly. We should extend the batteries' life and protect the environment," said the company's manager surnamed Hong. "Everyone should participate in it. It is something that benefits all of us."
Also, a private company at Nianfeng Village of Jiangqiao Town spent 20 million yuan on a waste steel crusher from France.
The most advanced in the world, it is the first of its kind in Shanghai and the sixth in China. It is expected to process 300,000 tons of waste steel a year.
