Energy savings enforced

ENERGY consumption in Jiading, as measured per 10,000 yuan of gross domestic product, fell 9.4 percent in the first half of the year. Emissions of sulfur dioxide were reduced by 810 tons, or 250 percent.

Continuous efforts have been made to make the district's air cleaner and its river water purer.

The government has limited approval of new industrial projects that require high energy consumption and produce high levels of pollution. From January to June, the district eliminated 100 companies considered subpar, freeing up 52 hectares for more productive industrial use.

In May, Jiading began supporting enterprises that will save the equivalent of at least 300 tons of coal through annual subsidies of 200 yuan per ton. Energy saving has been strengthened at luxury hotels, shopping malls and office buildings. About half a million energy-efficient light bulbs have been provided to families at discounts. Around 140 high coal-consuming companies are on a watch list.
