Engineering students prized for innovation

FIVE projects made by local university students have won prizes at the recent Delphi-Packard College Students Engineering Design Contest.

Since the second half of last year, Delphi Packard's Asia-Pacific Engineering Center cooperated with Shanghai University and East China University of Science and Technology to select five projects that aim to improve production processes. For each project, a professional engineer was assigned to work with the students.

In one project, sophomore Wang Chuanyong and his partners designed a straightening machine with programmed logic controller (PLC) for twisted strands to reduce the manual workload of workers.

Another prize-winning project was the creation of a wire looping machine. Presently, the wires are looped manually by workers, which is tiring and inefficient. With the new design, a worker can control three machines simultaneously, so as to save laborers and improve precision.

"These projects are only preliminary conceptual designs now," said Li Ming, director of the Asia-Pacific engineering department of Delphi Packard's Electrical and Electronic System Business Unit. "But they might well be applied on Delphi Packard's wire harness production line after being optimized."

Delphi Packard will hold the second college students' engineering design contest around June aiming at students from more universities, Li said.
