Ethical medic demands patience among all patients
YOU'VE got a pretty weird disease, but take it easy, I can cure it." That's the first sentence I heard from Zhang Jianming when I went to his clinic.
"What a madman," I thought.
He looks over 40, with a grey blue suit and gold-rimmed glasses. It is pretty different from the image I think a doctor should be. But with time goes on, I find this man has his reason to be that confident.
When Zhang takes patients' pulses, he takes both hands. For many times he even talks to himself as if he were alone in the room. When it is time to make the prescription, he will take out a calculator to count the amount of medicine. To be honest, when he is doing that he doesn't look elegant at all.
But the fact is, my "weird" disease which puzzled many hospitals has gradually been cured, and until this time can I realize that his inelegant diagnosing style is because of his total devotion to his duty.
He always has so many patients every day. Most patients have to wait for about half an hour even they have already made a reservation. And during my waiting, I talked with some of his regular patients, and I learned a lot of firsts of him - he was the first TCM doctor honored as "Shanghai Top 10 Young Doctors;" he was the first rural doctor who published articles in authoritative TCM magazine; he was also the first one to open private TCM clinic …
During his career, he has developed his unique prescription style which always combines various medicines. Since his special prescription has cured many patients with weird disease, his reputation has also expanded beyond the city.
Zhang's medical ethics was also respectable as his skills, as no one has privilege in his clinic.
"Who is doctor Zhang? Please check for this officer." One day in April, a man entered his clinic without queuing. But Zhang ignored him and called the next patient - an old lady in the queue.
"Doctor! This is the commander of our army! Please check for him first!" That man shouted again. This time, Zhang could not ignore him.
"You get out!" Zhang stood up and said angrily. "How could you break my rule? I have all patients and no officer here. You, get out and join the queue." He was back to treating the old lady's sickness again.
Zhang said that the patients were all of his life, and he would respect the life of every single patient.
