Expo clean-up efforts

JIADING workers and residents participated widely in improving the urban environment, maintaining public orderliness and upgrading service quality as the 200-day countdown to the opening of World Expo 2010 Shanghai passed on October 13.

Great efforts have been made to beautify the city and Jiading people are looking forward to the grand opening of the World Expo.

Almost 1,000 Communist Party members and volunteers of Jiangqiao Town took part in the festivities on October 13. They went in groups to 18 crossroads and five major farm produce markets.

Some were in charge of cleaning work and traffic order, while others gave volunteer medical insurance advice. Residents lined up in front of the stand in Tianfu Market, waiting to have their blood pressure checked.

More than 10 volunteers in Jianghua Community swept every corner along the paths. Yao Mei, an 80-year-old Party member in Xinghuo Residential Area, fixed six bicycles for residents. "It's a pleasure to be able to do something for the Expo," he said.

"Your pleasure is my job," the activity to promote window service, was introduced to the community service center in Anting Town. Enthusiastic workers were all smiles as they offered the service to residents.

The medical insurance consultation was popular. The prevention of hypertension provided by Anting Hospital also attracted lots of residents.

Tang Dynasty Restaurant organized a manners training program among its staff. Volunteers visited the homes of the poor, disabled or solitary senior people in Yulan No. 4 Residential Area to help check household appliances like water, electricity and gas.

In Xinbao Community of Jiading Industrial Zone, more than 50 community workers, property management staff and volunteers cleared out 2 tons of rubbish and 80 clothes drying spots.

"Now we have almost 80 volunteers. On every action day to welcome the Expo, we'll gather in the neighborhood committee. We have got used to the cleaning work and regard it as our responsibility," said Xu Huiying, a 67-year-old volunteer.

Jing Weiguo, a volunteer from the district's public transportation company, arrived at the station in front of Auchan Supermarket early in the morning, helping maintain order among the passengers.

Another 14 volunteers were busy popularizing the knowledge of proper manners on the bus in every service of Jiading Bus No. 3.

"More and more people are giving up their seats to others," said Jin Yan, a volunteer.
