F1 marks launch of car festival

BRITISH driver Lewis Hamilton roared to victory at the 2011 Formula One UBS Chinese Grand Prix on April 17, followed by Sebastian Vettel, who had triumphed twice this year.

Almost 100,000 spectators came to watch the race at the Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading District.

The motor-racing feast was kicked off by a 20-minute float parade featuring F1 drivers and a group of performers, who showcased the development of the auto industry and culture in Jiading.

Five female drummers, together with roller-skating athletes, ignited the race track with passion. Later, three ballerinas danced on a large float, which was surrounded by four smaller floats to create the shape of a lotus.

The parade finished with the event's theme song performed by three children of different nationalities.

The parade was followed by the opening ceremony of Shanghai Auto Culture Festival. With a focus on "Harmony between Humans and Vehicles," the opening ceremony interpreted the festival's theme "New Energy Resources, New Technology, New Life." Jiading also demonstrated to the global audience its achievements and prospects in becoming Shanghai International Auto City.

Shanghai International Circuit is located in Anting Town, the major gateway in the northwest of Shanghai to reach the Yangtze River Delta region.

Since 2005 to 2009, Jiading has successfully held three auto culture festivals. To enhance the economic development of Jiading by further taking advantage of the F1 Chinese Grand Prix as an international platform, the biennial event will become an annual event from this year.

The festival will run through the end of May and will include 15 activities such as exhibitions, races and forums.

At the Shuijing Square at the Shanghai International Circuit, a 100-square-meter booth provided visitors with the district's tourism information and policies on auto industry development. The F1 race has offered the district an arena to showcase the auto industry, creative industry and e-commerce.

The issue has also been raised to rename the racing track of the Shanghai International Circuit as either the "Jiading Track" or "Anting Track."
