Famous pooch brings back memories of childhood
A special exhibition to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the famous comic Daodao Dog, which was created by Jiading artist Murong Yindao, is underway in Shanghai. During the exhibition, the outer walls of the Shanghai Joy City are covered with images of Daodao and feature the dog's famous line: "I'm not missing you so much. I think of you only when I don't want to." From today to October 7, visitors to the shopping complex can get an inside look at Daodao's world. Here's a peek of what to expect.

According to Murong Yindao, Daodao was created to keep him company and he never expected his creation would accompany him for so long.
The special exhibition reveals the creation process.
On the first floor of Joy City, Murong's manuscripts are exhibited. There were many changes made before he felt satisfied with the final version.
A blackboard features the reviews written by the readers of Daodao during the past 10 years.
"I read the stories of Daodao and look back on every word he used to say. When I'm working overtime at midnight, I know I'm not alone," a reader called "Little Butterfly's Mum" wrote on the blackboard.
Daodao fans will likely relish the chance to take pictures of the famous dog. The pet pooch is everywhere in Joy City.

On the seventh floor is Murong's favorite Daodao image. The canine is wearing a blue-white shirt and green trousers and looks shy. He is sitting next to a friend and they are playing Famicom, a classic video game popular over 20 years ago. The scene is decorated in the style of 1980s, which will likely arouse the nostalgia feeling in your deep heart.
Around Daodao there are more than 30 original pictures and designs by creator Murong Yindao. The pictures invite visitors to retrace the journey of Daodao over the last decade.
Scene 3: Time is like a merry-go-round.
The third floor features a grand stage with a glass model of Daodao on the right side. Behind the stage is an accessories store, where you can get all kinds of Daodao products including books, cups and picture frames. The store is only open during the exhibition.
Scene 4: Shanghai shikumen corridor for nostalgia
The corridor of the eighth floor of Joy City is decorated with a classic scene of Daodao's childhood - the shikumen (stone-gated housing) corridor. Behind every open window along the corridor, there are exhibits of the old toys provided by famous toy collector Bajie. At the end of the corridor is Daodao with a lollipop. You may want to squat down and take a photo with him.
Scene 5: Oil paintings and photo wall
Over 10 large oil paintings and photo walls are in the shopping center for visitors to take pictures.

Murong Yindao is one of the leaders of China's original animation, as his cartoon image Daodao Dog is honored as the "Chinese Snoopy."
Daodao Dog is pretty special on Chinese mainland since it's one of the few designed for adult readers. Murong has published several cartoon series of "My Friend Daodao" and enjoyed a sale of over 500,000 books.
He used to be an executive director of cartoon movies and participated in the production of over 20 cartoon series including the American "Ninjia Turtles," "Zorro," "Fairy," French "Ocean Exploration," "Mice Family," "Animal Crackers," "Space Cowboy," Canadian "Three Piggies," "Felix Cat" and German "Explorer."
He is also a researcher of Shanghai Film Art Academy Comic Research Institute, guest professor of Fujian International Business & Economic College and visiting lecturer of Shandong University of Arts.
He also used to be a judge of the National Original Animation Contest at the first China International Animation & Comics Industry Fair and the Chinese mainland convener of the Taiwan-Mainland Original Comics 100 Union.
