Farmers busy ensuring crops can survive the cold

Jiading farmers are busy working to help crops survive the winter, such as collecting good soil for rice seedlings and taking more cold-proof measures in greenhouses.

The quality of soil is important for the growth of rice seedlings and many agricultural cooperatives in Jiading have started to collect the soil needed, agricultural officials said.

At the Shanghai Heqiao Cooperative, contractor Zhu Daming and three of his workers have begun their work.

First, they weed the land and get rid of stones and other hard clods. Then they used a rotary tiller to break up the soil and spread under shade while they wait for the moisture content to reach 10 to 15 percent.

“We have collected about 100 tons of soil,” Zhu said. “It’s nearly enough for our 66.7 hectares of farmland.”

With falling temperature drops and the increase in haze, Jiading farmers are making an effort to preserve the heat and isolate the air pollution to ensure the quality of vegetables in greenhouses.

At the Shanghai Luwang Cooperative, contractor Cao Jiuqing was busy covering greenhouses with nonwoven material to preserve the heat.

“Many vegetables died several days ago when the cold temperatures suddenly came,” Cao said.

“Some vegetables such as arugula will stop growing under 7 degrees Celsius, and tomorrow it will be 4 degrees. I have to hurry.”

Light is also important for vegetables. Since it can be affected by haze, many farmers are using new LED lighting.

Workers at the Malu Grape Theme Park are also busy turning the soil, applying fertilizer, and pruning the vines to ensure maximum yield next year.
