Farmers focus on producing green food

FOUR local agricultural institutions have passed an on-site inspection by Shanghai Agriculture Products Quality and Security Center recently - paving the way for them to receive "green food" and "pollution-free agricultural products" certificates in the future.

They include two cooperatives Zhongpu and Weigao, together with Shanghai Jiazhu Organic Osmanthus Park Development Co and Shanghai Changyuanxiang Vineyard.

Up till now, there are three green food certified enterprises and 36 with pollution-free agricultural products in Jiading District. How are these foods and products made? What is the difference between green ones and ordinary agriculture products? Let's take a look.

The vineyard of Dayu Village in Malu Town is one of the district's green food certified enterprises.

"There are many requirements for green foods, and a suitable planting environment is an important one. Around Dayu Village there are no industrial enterprises, and the air, water and soil are all very suitable for growing grapes," a technician surnamed Su from the vineyard said.

Grapes picked from the greenhouse can be eaten without having to clean them first - and a paper bag is key to this. After several rounds of tests, a special kind of paper bag is chosen to protect the grapes, which is very thin, good for the grapes to breathe and get light.

In addition, the vineyard uses exclusively organic fertilizers for all the grapes in its 12-hectare land, and the pesticides are made up of mineral or biological sources. Through analysis and adjustment of the temperature, humidity and minerals in the soil, the quality of the grapes can be guaranteed.

The peaches and pears in Lijiang Fruit Garden enjoy a high reputation in Jiading District for their big size, juiciness and sweetness. Five years ago the peaches and pears in the garden have passed the pollution-free test.

Lijiang Fruit Garden has set up a complete set of management measures and kept detailed records of the fruit growth, so as to ensure its quality.

The garden operator has rich experience, especially in preventing illness and worms. Every season workers will clean the garden, and every year they will completely disinfect the soil. Around the garden they install lamps to kill insects, and they raise chickens and ducks under the trees to catch insects.

At the agricultural science station of Waigang Town, you can see a certificate authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture in March 2007, certifying that 233 hectares of Waigang Grain Product Cooperative are pollution free. They use seeds with outstanding anti-illness and anti-insect characteristics and are strict in the amount of pesticides used.

Waigang has refused those polluting factories to settle down in the town. What's more, all the workers in the cooperative must have health certificates and they carry out inspections on every batch of food to ensure quality.
