Farmers work hard to reap fall rice
FARMERS in Jiading District are busy harvesting the autumn rice and sowing the winter wheat in the fields for the next crop.
Harvesting started on October 28. Owing to a fair number of rainy days since then, farmers have been in a race against time to get their work done.
Many harvesters were busy working in the rice fields of Shanghai Tingyuan Grain Professional Cooperative.
Rao Xibing, an employee with the cooperative, said they started work at 8:30am and finished at 7pm during the harvest season. On the other side, workers were sowing fields with wheat. Not far from there, tractors were digging ditches to drain away the water.
At the drying station, the workers were also busy working. Within five minutes, there came three trucks full of rice to unload at the station. The employee there said, many more trucks would arrive soon.
In the drying cabin, 12 machines each with a capacity of 12 tons per hour were humming away. Workers were busy weighing the rice, testing the humidity, unloading, drying and reloading rice on the trucks.
Nearby village committees also sent extra hands to help harvest, plough and plant.
Lu Huifang, a Beixin Village official who was testing the humidity of the rough rice, said all members of the village committee had joined in the harvest. They could only have their meals at shift changes.
