Festival for fun also helps the needy
THE Third Community Neighborhood Festival opened at Jiading District's Denglong Square on March 7 and runs for a month.
Featuring a charity bazaar, the festival aims to create a harmonious environment among neighbors and to help those in need.
Almost 400 articles were brought by local residents who bartered with each other. About 250 articles with a total value of more than 8,000 yuan (US$1,171) were donated by individuals and businesses in the community to the charity bazaar.
The money raised will be used to provide necessities for poor residents.
On the day, gifts totaling 2,300 yuan in value were delivered to needy families in the communities. "For a sofa cushion, I bartered an environmentally-friendly bag, earplugs and five yuan. It's worthwhile," said a local resident who didn't want to put her name on the good-deed list. "I'm happy to donate what I have to those in need."
Shen Huiying, a resident at Liyuan No. 1 Community, said many of the articles on sale were new and the prices were reasonable.
The event also attracted many migrant workers. Wang Mei from Anhui Province bought a toy rabbit for five yuan and another migrant worker living on Tacheng Road spent 200 yuan on a man's cashmere sweater as a present for her boyfriend.
To add entertainment to the festival for local residents, a World Expo knowledge contest, a sports meeting and a dancing competition were also staged during the festival.
