Find a wealth of art in Jiading’s folk museums

With a history of 800 years, Jiading has established a collection of national cultural heritage sites and preserved intangible cultural heritages such as Jiading bamboo carving. In addition to public museums and galleries, there are also a number of privately owned folk museums and cultural centers in the district waiting to be experienced. Here are four of them.

Shanghua Art Museum

The main building of Shanghua Art Museum is hidden in a sea of bamboo in the Jiading New City Ziqidonglai Landscape Axis. Opposite the district library and cultural center, the museum is a new cultural landmark in the district, serving as a platform for art exhibitions and cultural exchanges.

The building covers an area of 600 square meters with an open-air terrace and a carefully-designed green space and water landscape. Separated into two levels, the museum houses a main exhibition hall, a painting studio and a resting area. The main exhibition hall is open to the public for free.

Officially launched last month, the museum is presenting a painting exhibition featuring around 50 works from renowned contemporary artists nationwide including a few Jiading painters.

The free exhibition is open until September 9 and more exhibitions are planned for later in the year.

10am-4pm

Muzhen Lobby

Muzhen Lobby is an antique furniture store in the former factory of Shanghai No. 15 Towel Factory in Jiading.

With an area of 365 square meters for exhibition, the lobby displays more than 100 pieces of antique furniture along with some 20 new ones.

The owner bought the antiques for his collection and exhibition only; none of them is for sale.

However, if you do like one, you can get a replica manufactured in the owner’s furniture factory.

Among the collection is a furniture box made during the Republic of China period (1911-1949), which served as a bride’s dowry for the storage of clothes and jewelry.

There is also a desk and chair set called a hua’an, which was made in late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It is believed that only wealthy families could afford hua’an at that time. Now the desk and chair set is displayed in the lobby, where the owner’s daughter and friends practice their calligraphy and painting.

Sets of replica antique furniture in mahogany and teak can also be found here along with paintings, calligraphy works and ceramics.
