Ford testing in virtual city for cars
FORD Motor Company has decided to test some of its technologies under development at a Jiading-based enclosed testing demonstration base for self-driving vehicles.
These include left-turn assistance and speed recommendations as vehicles approach traffic lights.
Known as the National Intelligent Connected Vehicle Pilot Zone, the test area serves auto makers and parts suppliers both across China and overseas. The zone began operating in June.
The first phase of the project occupies an area of 5 square kilometers. It was extended to 27 square kilometers in September. From next year to 2019, the test area will expand to cover all of Anting Town, deploying a fleet of 5,000 automated cars in a 100-square-kilometer area that includes highways.
During the final stage, planned for 2020, highly connected corridors will link Anting with Hongqiao Transport Hub, supporting 10,000 self-driving cars on 500 kilometers of roadway.
China has made “intelligent connected cars” a key direction of its 2025 road map to manufacturing upgrades. And this project is set to take off in Jiading District, home to nearly 70 percent of Shanghai’s car manufacturing, and 80 percent of automotive research and development.
The test demonstration base is run like a virtual city for cars that will go through dozens of challenges that simulate complex driving scenarios, with the help of the base’s own artificial intelligence and special communication tools. The complex covers urban, rural and highway scenarios, and much more ambitious tests are planned over the next five years.
From intersections where traffic flow is complicated and mixed, to tunnels and boulevards where signals can get blocked, and to parking lots and electric charging spots that need real-time availability updates, cars will learn to understand and adapt to the environment information picked up by their own sensors and satellite systems.
