Foreign businessman shows charity knows no boundaries
IN Delphi we strive to be a good corporate neighbor in every community we reside in," says Majdi B. Abulaban, president of Delphi Asia Pacific. He says he believes a company owes a debt to the society that provides it benefits and profit.
The businessman, who is devoted to philanthropy, was the only foreigner in Shanghai to be designated a Charity Individual Award at the first Shanghai Charity Awards.
Abulaban was employed by Delphi in 1985 in the US state of Ohio as a manufacturing engineer. Since then he has served in various positions at the company's many subsidiaries around the world. In 1995, he was appointed general manager of then Shanghai Packard Electric System Co Ltd, which is now a Delphi Packard plant located in Anting Town of Jiading District.
In the past 10 years, Abulaban has devoted himself to various charity programs, such as helping the poor and disabled, disaster relief and environmental protection. He and his company have to date contributed more than 2 million yuan (US$300,440) to worthy causes.
Abulaban and his colleagues are also engaged in education and charity works for the elderly. In June 2006, Shanghai Delphi Packard Electric System Co Ltd formed a support relationship with the Anting Social Welfare Institution.
In addition to providing material aid, Abulaban and his colleagues do all they can to address the psychological and emotional needs of older people. His company's charity team regularly visits the elderly, talking with them and sometimes providing entertainment. During festival times, elderly people without families are invited to the company's galas.
To Abulaban, Anting Town is a beautiful place that has become his second home. He is fond of noting that a leader's personality and moral character shape the culture of his business. A company should never forget its commitment to social responsibility, he says.
Borderless charity
In 1998, his company's staff donated books, desks and chairs, air-conditioners, teaching equipment and 50,000 yuan in cash to the Anting Primary School. In March 2004, he personally donated 50,000 yuan in cash to the civil undertakings of Anting Town. In November of the same year, he donated 10,000 yuan to the Red Cross Society of Jiading District on behalf of his company. In 2006 and 2007, he and his company staff also donated 100,000 yuan to Jiading District's charity fund-raising gala "True Love Under a Blue Sky."
In late 2007, Delphi Packard Electric Systems has launched a nation-wide volunteer program. Many of its divisions in China have started voluntary programs helping needy people, education and environmental projects. Their footprints are in schools, nursing homes and residential communities. They also assisted southwestern China regions affected by drought and the quake-hit Yushu County of Qinghai Province.
The Asia Pacific headquarters of Delphi Packard Electric Systems and its plants in Jiading have also provided voluntary services for students of different ages. Recently Shanghai Delphi Packard Electric System and the Automotive College at Tongji University agreed to cooperate on a series of programs. The company not only presents career lectures for junior students of the university, but also offers them visiting and internship opportunities. Local hardworking primary school students from poor families have also received special scholarships from the company with money raised at auctions of staff donations.
Abulaban is well-known as an outstanding entrepreneur as well as philanthropist. He received the "Innovation Leader" prize of 2005 China Business Leaders Awards, and a special nomination award of Asian Business leaders - the only non-Chinese winner in that year.
He was also conferred a Magnolia Gold Award by the city government, the top honor for foreigners in Shanghai. He received a permanent residence permit in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the country's social and economic development.
