Former wasteland teems with life
A wildlife refuge on Liudao Island in Jiading now holds 162 species of animals and 173 species of plants.
The island was where two rivers converged in Huating Town in the north of the district in the 1950s.
In the 1980s the local administration started to green the island and the increase in greenery led animals to find shelter there.
“Liudao Island contained a sequestered and refined living condition, which catered for the needs of animals.” said official Lu Wanpeng.
Jiading went further. In 2013, the local government expanded the island from 67 hectares to 100 and conserved more animals on it.
In the past three years, the government has cleaned up 5,000 cubic meters of sludge in the river to boost water quality. A wetland was also created.
To support the huge biological diversity and ecosystem, the government created a manmade forest covering 3 to 5 hectares to provide shelter and food for the animals.
Today, what was an isolated piece of waste land is now full of life.
A monitoring system is to be built to keep an eye on the animals in future.
