From a collection of ancient teapots to latest art trends
With a history of 800 years, Jiading has established a collection of national cultural heritage sites and preserved intangible culture heritages such as Jiading bamboo carving. In addition to public museums and galleries, there are also a number of privately owned folk museums and cultural centers in the district, waiting to be experienced. Here are just three.
A history of teapots
A good teapot matters a lot for a good cup of tea. A zisha clay teapot is not just a pot, it’s also art. Shanghai-style teapot artist Xu Sihai founded the Sihai Teapot Museum in 1993 in a seven-story building in Jiading.
The museum houses more than 300 exquisite teapots from as early as the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). There is also a tearoom for visitors on the first floor with tables and chairs made in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The exhibition halls on the second to fifth floors are decorated with wood carvings. Apart from teapots, visitors can see ceramic artworks collected by Xu over the past 30 years.
A highlight of the collection is “Daheng Pot,” which is called the “King of Zisha Teapot.”

Be closer to art
The main building of Artron Art Center in Jiading used to be a wastewater treatment factory for the former Shanghai No. 16 Towel Factory. Designed by Liu Yichun, the building, also called the “Ding Yi Building,” shines with its contemporary features. Artron Shanghai has eight buildings in different styles to house a printing factory for art books, design center, photography and printing center, online portal, library-style art bookstore, artwork showroom, art museum and cafe.
The “Ding Yi Building” is a work presented by Liu and artist Ding Yi, the first Chinese designer to have worked with French luxury brand Hermes. The building features wall tiles of 48 different designs with the Chinese character
“米”(rice). Visitors can not only see exhibitions and pick one or two art books at Artron Art Bookstore but get the latest art information and trends. Artron also opened a flagship store at the China Art Museum recently, where visitors can buy artworks and use personalized services.
