Fruits flourish with new varieties

JIADING District has set up special orchards and brought more fruit varieties to its residents this year.

The district introduced three new farm products this year - red jujubes, walnut seeds from China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and blueberries from the United States. They are expected to be on sale in 2014.

"Besides a one-time investment of 70,000 yuan (US$10,769), we also need to spend about 2,000 yuan per mu (1 mu equals 0.067 hectare) for field management, most of which goes on keeping the soil moisture and acidity," blueberry planter Hu Peng said. The output will hit 500 kilograms per mu three years later and economic returns will range from 30,000 yuan to 100,000 yuan per mu.

A total of 140 red jujube and walnut trees from Xinjiang have survived and entered observation period in Shengxin Cooperative in Jiading Industrial Zone.
